The effects of Methadone is similar to those of heroin and include feelings of well-being, relief from physical pain and psychological unease. This is why methadone is primarily used to ease heroin withdrawal. But some misunderstand and get addicted to this.

But Methadone is a very addictive drug. It may be effective in helping heroin users to withdraw, but methadone misuse can lead to dependency problems. It develops tolerance level, this means the user increasingly needs more methadone to get the same effect.
Unsupervised or sudden withdrawal can lead to a period of diarrhea, insomnia, vomiting, hot and cold sweats, and cramps.
It is a powerful drug, hence excessive doses can lead to overdose or coma. Misuse can also be fatal.

Methadone is both an answer and a question. Many ex-herion addicts live a more successful life by doing methadone instead of herion. In fact many addicts consider methadone a legal form of herion for that reason. It is a drug, and it is addictive. It is only prescribed for herion addicts, not for alcohol addiction as many people think. The debate continues as to whether or not it is an effective way of treating addiction. Most inpatient drug treatment programs do not consider methadone an answer, but just a substitute and do not include it as part of treatment.
